Reporting and Writing

The reporting and writing process is how I first fell in love with journalism. Reporting has gifted me with the opportunity to absorb the wisdom of my interviewees. It has embedded in me the importance of creating trust both inside and outside of the newsroom. Writing is where I can implement my creativity. Whether it be through specific arrangement of quotes or intentional word choice, I hope to leave my stylistic mark on all of my stories.

Linked below are some of the most thoughtful pieces I have written throughout all five sections of The Standard. I believe a strong journalist is a versatile one: that's why I've dedicated myself to writing for every section of the paper. Click on each image to read a description of the reporting and to read the story.

School leadership, students reflect on road to Ofsted “Outstanding” rating

For Board of Trustees Chair Erin Roth, no word better describes her reaction than “speechless” after receiving the report that the school had now been rated “Outstanding” by the Office for Standards in Education after their inspection Nov. 14-16. Previously receiving an overall rating of “Requires Improvement” after inspections in December 2021, the school earned the highest merit “Outstanding” this year. My process

I chronicled parts of my reporting and writing process to show how I craft stories with organization, methodology and speed.

Step 1 – Pitching

On our publication's story ideas spreadsheet we use for pitching, I filled out each column to inform the online sports section of my idea. Pitching is a critical step to creating a strong story idea with a clear angle and ideas for all elements.

Step 2 – Reaching out and interview preparation

The next step is reaching out to interviewees. My interviewees included students and the Director of Athletics as an authority source.

Step 3 – Preparing to write a draft

After parsing through my transcripts on Otter, I compile both explanatory and emotional quotes that I may want to use. The initial bullet points are not completely edited, but I make sure to fix syntax and any transcription mistakes while drafting.

Step 4 – Adding media items

No story on The Standard is complete without media items. Click on each image to find how I procured this information to add to my story.

Step 5 – The final draft

After going through three editors, the final document with a complete draft and media elements is complete! I then post it on our web page, and it is officially published.
