Broadcast Journalism

As Deputy Editor-in-Chief: Online, I love all things digital, including broadcast. I am an avid "This American Life" listener and love when a New York Times reel pops up on my Instagram grid, so I knew that I wanted to guide my staff in creating the most engaging audio and video stories in our publication's history.

Expanding video production

This is our second year of having a journalism class solely dedicated to multimedia reporting. Our staff has new cameras, microphones and other equipment to fully embrace video reporting. Earlier this year, a group of students in the media team approached me and the managing team to create a weekly broadcast show called Student News Network (or SNN) summarizing events from the week prior.

It was a great idea, and it has been executed even better. After the team created an initial draft, I provided some feedback as to what they could do to improve.

Here is the most recent episode of Standard News Network after going through three editors.

Livestreaming

A few weeks ago, a few media team members created our first live broadcast of a basketball game. I helped them set-up and kept in contact with them during technical falters. I streamed it from my laptop during our staff's layout night, and I promoted it on The Standard Instagram, Twitter and X, to amass a larger audience

Video production and pitching

I edited this video after compiling footage along with another editor a year ago. If I were to edit this video today, I would request conducting interviews in quieter spots and ensuring better lighting through out all the footage.

Audio and podcasts

From "London community reacts to Israel, Palestine conflict"

I incorporated sound clips from an Israeli vigil and a protest in support of Palestine, so readers could get a feel of what these events were like. Adding audio to the story pushed on its pathos appeal. I also created an interactive Genially with a timeline and more photos of the events for users to click on. To listen, click on the play buttons.

Politics Update used to be a recurring podcast column on The Standard. I took over the column last year, but as my workload increased on The Standard, our installments died down. A few editors have expressed interest in reviving the podcast in the next few months. The PDF below also shows how we planned for the podcast and created a small outline for what we wanted to touch upon.
